1. The 37th International Danube Symposium – Ljubljana, Slovenia (5-8 October, 2005)

The 37th International Danube Symposium for Neurological Sciences and Continuing Education was held in Ljubljana, Slovenia, from 5-8 October, 2005, under the the host of the Slovene Medical Association, the Slovenian Neurological Association and Society of Clinical Neurophysiology, and the University Medical Centre Ljubljana Division of Neurology. The event was combined with the traditional Dr. Janez Faganel Memorial Lecture and with a Satellite ‘Stroke’ Symposium. The Convenor of the 37th International Danube Symposium was Professor Zvezdan Pirtosek.

On the first day, the Stroke Symposium (organized by Professor Anna Czlonkowska, Central and East European Stroke Society) dealed with following topics: Management of acute ischaemich stroke with various lectures and a round table with the title Fibrinolytic therapy in Danube countries, followed by short communications. The second topic was Carotid stenting, also with a round table on Carotid stenting procedure, our experiences. The Satellite Symposium was closed by the poster highlights.

The opening ceremony was followed by the Janez Faganel Memorial Lecture, held by T.S. Prevec (Ljubljana, Slovenia): Sharp or kind stimulus to activate the sensory system? Keeping with tradition, the participants had the opportunity to attend the Danube lecture held by V.V. Dolenc (Ljubljana, Slovenia): Role of neurosurgery in neuroscience, daily practice and research.

During the Danube Symposium following sessions and topics were presented:

    • Pathophysiology of cortical motor disorders
    • Functional neuroimaging
    • Satellite Symposium on new diagnostic and treatment aspects of neurological disorders
    • Recent findings in experimental and clinical neurology
    • Neurodegenerative disorders
    • Hand-over clinics – Transition from paediatric to adult neurology
    • Specialist nurses in neurology
    • Satellite Symposium on established and emerging indications for botulinum toxin treatment
    • Basal ganglia video dinner
    • Personal neurological letters from Danube countries and beyond (Austria, Slovenia and Iran)
    • Paediatric neurological disorders at the end of adolescence
    • Migraine
    • Satellite Symposium on a new option in migraine prevention
    • Satellite Symposium on dementia
    • Demyelinating disease
    • Bridging neurology and psychiatry
    • Round table on bridging neurology and psychiatry
    • Satellite Symposium on MS treatment
    • Ethical issues in neurology
    • Polyneuropathies.

Moreover, a special session was dedicated to the meeting of the Young Neurologists’ (YNT) Get-together and the International Danube Association held its forthcoming Curatorium Management Meeting (for the Protocol of the Meeting see 2), discussing important topics of the Association. The Danube Symposium hosted excellent international lecturers with outstanding presentations which were attended by a great number of neurologists coming from the Danube-countries, but also from all over Europe and even from elsewhere. Every day, a highlight of excellent posters took place and the symbolic 1 EURO registration fee for young neurologists enabled many colleagues to participate at the Meeting. The Symposium was very successful in all scientific topics that were very well attended by many neurological specialists and scientists.

Of course, it should not be forgotten to mention the numerous memorable social events, giving a brilliant opportunity to meet colleagues and further discuss various topics; a “pleasent get-together of friends, new and old, perhaps with a glass of a vintage Slovenian wine, in one of the smallest, but most beautiful European capitals” – as Zvezdan Pirtosek, Convenor of the Meeting expressed in his welcome address.

Last but not least, on behalf of the International Danube Association, we would like to express our cordial thanks to the Organizers’ whole team in Ljubljana with all collaborators for the wonderful meeting and the local PCO for the perfect organization of the 37th Danube Symposium!
