1. Danube Clinical Neurology Training Course - Multiple Sclerosis, Hedache and Parkinson's disease (27-28 May 2004, Szeged, Hungary)

The "Danube Clinical Neurology Training Course" was held in Szeged, Hungary between 27-28 May, 2004, under the joint organization of the Department of Neurology of the University Szeged and the International Danube Neurology Association. The international meeting was the first of this kind, because it was meant to be an educational course mainly for young neurologists in clinical, scientific field of neurology, trainees, PhD-students from Central- and East European countries focusing on three main fields in neurology: Multiple sclerosis, Headache and Parkinson's disease.

More than 200 registered participants have attented the Training Course, from more than 20 countries in and even out of Europe.

Excellent speakers have been invited to hold plenary lectures in the following topics:

  • H. Lassmann (Wien): Recent development in the pathomechanism of multiple sclerosis.
  • B. Hemmer (Düsseldorf): Recent development in the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis.
  • L. Kappos (Basel): Treatment strategies in multiple sclerosis.
  • F. Deisenhammer (Innsbruck): Neutralizing antibodies during immuno-modulant therapy of MS
  • L. Edvinsson (Lund): Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) in primary headaches.
  • J. Haan (Leiden): Genetics of migraine: New discoveries.
  • J. Tajti, (Szeged) L. Vécsei (Szeged): Treatment of migraine: 2004.
  • P. Riederer (Würzburg): Pathomechanism of Parkinson’s disease.

  • H. Reichmann (Dresden): Diagnostic problems in Parkinson syndromes.
  • A. Korczyn (Tel Aviv): Treatment of Parkinson’s disease.
  • F. Gerstenbrand (Wien): Ethics in neurology - The ethical aspects in clinical trials. Followed up by a round-table discussion under the following participants: H. Baumgartner (Innsbruck), D. Bereczky (Debrecen), P. Halász (Budapest).

The Teaching Course furthermore served as a meeting-point for the discussion of specialists in Mulitple Sclerosis, since on the first day of the meeting, 24 colleagues from Central and East-Europe presented the experience of their MS-Center. Following countries with their MS-Centers were present with a presentation: Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Rumania, Russia, Serbia and Montenegro, Slovakia and Slovenia.

Both the abstracts of plenary lectures and MS-reports, furthermore the more than 40 years' history of the International Danube Symposium were published in the Final Programme of the Training Course as a Supplement of the Cephalagia Hungarica - Bulletin of the Hungarian Headache Society, No.13.

The scientific programme of the Training Course has been evaluated and accredited by the Hungarian Center for Postgradual Education for highly qualitative 16 CME credit points (meaning that the participants can count it to their obligatory continuing education programme).

The social events of the Meeting (Sightseeing in Szeged, Welcome reception, Fishermen's Party) were a good possibility for the participants to exchange their thoughts and experience under relaxed atmosphere of the city of sunshine. Also, the first day's welcome reception was a perfect event for the celebration of Professor Gerstenbrand's 80th birthday. His huge birthday cake – from which all participants had the possibility to taste – symbolized with different coulours all the Danube countries and the river Danube as well. Professor Endre Csanda gave a speech on this occasion, underlining among others Professor Gerstenbrand's great personality, humanity, precise and punctual working ability and enthusiasm, friendliness, diplomatic and organizing skills in creating a bridge between East and West with the help of the Danube Symposium. In addition, his scientific works are real milestones in the development of Neurology. With a brief reaction, Professor Gerstenbrand expressed his cordial thanks towards the organizers for this great surprise and being Honorary President of the Danube Symposium, he appreciated the work of the Head Office in Szeged as well, serving as a bridge between the former East and West.

6. Danube Neurology Fellowship – "F. S. Tschabitscher Danube Neurology Fellowship"

6.1 In November 2003, again a colleague from a Danube country (Dr. Vasile Tibre, Medical Clinic of Cluj-Napoca, Rumania-Transsylvania) participated in the fellowship-programme founded and coordinated by the Head Office of the International Danube Symposium in Szeged, Hungary. Enclosed, you find the report of his fellowship-pogramme:

"In November 2003 I had the privilege to spend one week on invitation of Professor László Vécsei at the Department of Neurology, University Szeged. As a neurophysiologist, I was interested in changing experience in the field of neurophysiology with my colleague from Szeged, Dr. Sándor Beniczky. I spent one week in the EDX laboratory with Dr. Beniczky, learning and observing his clinical and neurophysiological examinations, techniques and exchanging information with him. There were performed almost all types of neurophysiological examinations as nerve conduction study, needle EMG and evoked potentials. I was impressed by the seriousity and professionalism of Dr. Beniczky. The staff at the Department of Neurology were very friendly and helpful at any occasions. As a result of my exchange programme, I asked Dr. Beniczky to participate as invited lecturer to my EMG Postgraduate Course in early October 2004 at Cluj-Napoca.

Also, Professor Vecsei invited me to sustain a dissertation on a chosen subject of my main field interests. Since I have a particular interest in autonomic tests, I chose to speak about them for my Hungarian colleagues.

Szeged is a small and very beautiful town, with old nice buildings, resembling with my hometown, Cluj-Napoca - being a nice and old city in the heart of Transsylvania. I left Szeged thinking to the future cooperation."

6.2. Another colleague, Dr. Milija D. Mijajlovic (Institute of Neurology, Clinical Center of Serbia, Belgrade, Serbia and Montenegro) spent one month at the Department of Neurology, Szeged, Hungary.

"During May 2004 as a guest of the International Danube Neurology FelIowship, I spent beautiful four weeks at the Clinic of Neurology of the University of Szeged. During my stay In Szeged I was involved in the whole spectrum of everyday clinic works: morning meetings, discussion and examination of the hospitalized patients on everyday rounds as well as examination of the patients in the outpatients clinic. During this part of my observational stay at the Department of Neurology I was informed about the organization of the clinic and also about diagnostic and therapeutic possibilities. The most part of the time I spent in the laboratories for cerebral haemodinamics and experimental studies in migraine in animal models, where all the details of the experiments and results were explained to me by very friendly and kind colleagues.

As I am especially interested in stroke, I spent several days at the Department of Radiology, where I discussed with colleagues about the indications for the stent implantations for the carotid and vertebral arteries, and I also observed the procedure of the stent implantation.

At the end of mt stay, thanks to my colleagues in Szeged, I took part at the Danube Clinical Neurology Training Course. My clinical and experimental observation stay in Szeged at the Department of Neurology was very useful and informative for me. I saw many interesting things and I could learn also much from young but experienced colleagues. We discussed about the possibilities of establishing collaboration between the two Neurological Departments especially in the field of headaches and cerebrovascular diseases and we already arranged some future activities.

I spent wonderful time in the beautiful town of Szeged, thanks to very friendly and kind colleagues, to whom I would like to express the great gratitude."

9. Harmonization of PhD-Programs in Medicine and Health Sciences

After extensive discussion and exchange of ideas and experiences among colleagues from 27 universities of 15 European countries, the participants of the European Conference on Harmonization of PhD-Programs in Medicine and Health Sciences have agreed the socalled "Zagreb Declaration". In this sense, in 6 Articles, the goals of PhD-programs have been convened, and the "Conference agreed that a suitable benchmark to describe the necessary achievement is a PhD thesis based on original in extenso publications in internationally recognized scientifc-medical journals." (Article 3). It recommends as a minimum requirement of a PhD-thesis that at least three in extenso papers should be published in internationally recognized journals. In addition to this, Article 4 declares that the "PhD-Programs should include theoretical basis as well as development of technical research skills in taught courses where appropriate." Article 5 recommends accessability to these programs via web sites and written material and "encourages the development of joint PhD-Programs". Article 6 stresses the necessity of support by "medical faculties, universities, national governments, the EC or private sponsors and other institutions".

The Zagreb Declaration was signed by numerous representatives of international and Croatian professional and academic associations and also discussed at the Management Committee Meeting of the Danube Symposium in Sofia (Bulgaria), September 17, 2004.

10. Finances of the International Danube Symposium

Unfortunately, the Head Office of the International Danube Symposium has no financial support from roof organizations, therefore from year to year, it is becoming more and more difficult to run our office. Of course, it is our task and we are continously making great efforts to find new sources from potential sponsors, pharmaceutical industry, etc, but this is becoming a heavy task.

As previously decided and passed at Management Committee Meeting of the Danube Symposium, the financial sources of the IDS from all kinds of symposia, conferences, meetings or courses under the roof and auspices of our organization, are as follows: The financial surplus of all meetings should be divided 70:30 between the Local Organizers and the permanent International Danube Symposium Head Office in Szeged, Hungary or the amount of min. EUR 2,500 is to be transferred to the Head Office according to our invoice.
